The final of the MUF LAB 2018 open competition was moderated by Vice President, Director for Development of the Urban Environment of the Skolkovo Foundation, Head of the V.L. Glazychev Territorial Development Department, Elena Zelentsova. MUF LAB 2018 was held on 18 July in the "Osman" hall.
The jury consisted of Managing Director of the Retail Sales Department for Moscow and the Moscow Region of the VTB retail network Tatyana Alperovich, Director of the Infrastructure Management Department of the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO Gleb Groshenko, Deputy General Director for Development of the “Museums of Moscow” Museum Association Georgy Slugin, Director of Rental Property Management at Millhouse Elena Malinovskaya, Head of the Department for Development of the Territory of the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve Dmitry Mashinsky, First Deputy Head of the Non-Ticket Income Service of the Moscow Metro Leyla Latina, Marketing and Public Relations Director of Technopolis Moscow Margarita Makarcheva, Сo-Founder and General Director of the CENTER Strategic Development Agency Sergey Georgievsky, Head of the Piloting Division of the Smart City Lab of the Information Technologies Department of Moscow Eldar Fayzullin, and Deputy Head of the Management of the Architectural Council of Moscow Sergey Glubokin.
According to Elena Zelentsova, such projects really change the life of modern cities and this is a very important experience for the Russian capital. Experts receive an opportunity to become acquainted with interesting projects, and the young teams to show themselves. She also added that many of the participants in the lab, regardless of the outcome of the competition, will find support here for the development and implementation of the submitted projects.
Within the framework of the competition, projects aimed at resolving real tasks set by large organizations and competition sites acting as partners of the MUF LAB were considered. Projects by 14 teams made it to the final of the competition and competed for awards in relation to the best architectural, spatial, technological and sociocultural solutions. At all stages of the selection process projects were assessed from the perspective of their potential for implementation.
1. Architectural-spatial solution
Projects on the creation, design and programming of spaces were presented under this nomination. Teams proposed their options for developing infrastructure and communication models.
The winner was the "City in the City" project team, with their idea for transforming the inner courtyard of the Museum of Moscow. According to one of the creators of the project, architect Stepan Kukharsky, currently the museum courtyard’s key function relates to transit and occasionally the holding of events. The territory is not adapted for changes in the weather, the overall architectural appearance of the yard is often disrupted due to construction, and it lacks convenient navigation.
The SA lab team that proposed the "City in the City” project performed zoning of the territory and prescribed scenarios for its use depending on the season and other factors, and also proposed equipping the courtyard with functional lighting and convenient navigation. According to the project concept, the territory should be divided into three entrance areas, the main square and an intermediate zone. In the intermediate zone, for example, it is proposed to place wooden summer terraces, benches, small flowerpots and vases, and the main square should easily be transformable to suit museum’s current needs.
2. Technological solution
According to the MUF LAB jury, the best technological solution was proposed by the Uhome project team. One of its creators, Alexandr Pavlov, commented that Uhome is a technology for imitating living spaces. Special constructions make it possible to simulate the user's presence in any environment, down to the smallest detail. He noted that Uhome already creates imitations of residential buildings for researchers and participants in Arctic expeditions.
The finalist noted that imitation technology can be useful for developers, who are constantly seeking new formats for interactive engaging work with clients. At the same time, the market does not currently have a fully-fledged solution allowing the demonstration of potential or existing interiors in full size.
3. Sociocultural solution
The "Bank of Our Courtyard" project, developed for VTB Bank, won the award for the best sociocultural solution. In the opinion of project participant Pavel Surkov, bank branches can become centers of the educational ecosystem for entrepreneurs.
Today any city district features dozens if not hundreds of small businesses. However, they are all separated, do not have sufficient knowledge for proper process management, and the potential of the urban environment is not fully utilized. The "Educational Ecosystems" Practice Community, which created the "Bank of Our Courtyard" project, proposes making branches of VTB Bank drivers of local business development and a point of growth for the business community. For example, within the framework of the project it would be possible to conduct courses on SMM and webinars, set practical assignments, and conduct seminars on the exchange of experience and help entrepreneurs jointly implement their projects in the bank’s branches.
Participation in the international competition in Copenhagen
In addition, during the final of the MUF LAB competition, Director of the Creative Industries Agency Ekaterina Sachkova said that the agency has represented the international Creative Business Cup contest for the last six years, and in 2018 the winner was selected from among MUF LAB participants. The winner was the iFarm team, which will now represent Russia at the world competition in Copenhagen.
One of the authors of the iFarm project, Maksim Chizhov, noted that the project proposes the creation of year-round city greenhouses, which can be located both on the ground and on the roofs of buildings. The greenhouses are fully automated, their size can reach 100 square meters, and at a cost of approximately four million rubles their pay back period is around 3.5 years.
